The exhibition titled ‘A Retrospective on Ten Years of Practice in Eastern Contexts’ takes place in the Yale School of Architecture gallery. In the past ten years or so, many Yale School of Architecture alumni practicing in the Eastern regions have received attention but seldom seen together as a collective form. With the intent to among the participants, the exhibition forms a collective identity twelve young emerging firms operated by YSoA alumni contributed to the exhibition. Although coming from disparate cultural and regional background including Singapore, South Korea, Japan, America, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, they have many shared characteristics in terms of education and work.
The exhibition design attempts to flatten the experience through placing the exhibits in a non-hierarchical layout. Instead of a biographical display of individual architects, projects are organized based on the physicality of the models themselves removing any contextual and symbolic meanings. Its intent is simply to facilitate cross-reading among architects across time. When projects are removed from their context, they are understood based solely on the representational capacities of the models.

Without a prescribed path, the viewers can circulate through the space freely. The exhibition serves as a platform to bring the projects in a dialogue—to construct the lines that create out of seemingly disparate stars a network of a larger image, idea, or identity. While the models stand on different heights— demanding that they be examined in close detail and postures specific to itself—there is also room to step back and examine the models altogether: a stepping close to and away from process that seeks to raise awareness of how attention to the detail of the individual projects can also make visible a common thread that ties them all together.

The exhibition serves to construct a link between Western education and its manifestation in Eastern practices. Yale School of Architecture is now at the crossroads – while striving to hold onto its tradition, diversity and pluralism has been brought to the foreground of discussion. Previously, outstanding YSoA alumni has achieved attentions, but the works are seldom seen together as a collective form. As part of the effort in seeking alternative discourses, this exhibition specifically focuses on the effort of outstanding alumni in architectural practice in the context of the east. Reflecting back in order to look forward.
